The 15" viola sits at the edge of full size — built for players who are ready for the depth and projection of a larger instrument but need something slightly more manageable than a 16" body. It's a common landing point for teenage violists and smaller-framed adults moving up from a 14".

Every 15" V. Richelieu™ is hand-graduated by our master luthiers from hand-selected spruce and maple, with the same fingerboard geometry, bridge work, and hand-painted oil varnish we use across the full line. Nothing about how it's built changes at this size — only the proportions do, so the player gets a viola that's genuinely sized for them rather than a compromise between "too small" and "too big."

High-Quality Materials

Every V. Richelieu™ is made entirely in our Vermont workshop, hand-graduated by senior luthiers who thin each top and back to precise, individually judged measurements — not a factory template. Our spruce is hand-split and sourced from Italy and Switzerland; our maple comes from Bosnia. Where we can, we build with FSC®-certified tonewoods and offer GaiaTone and Sonowood as ebony-alternative fittings, so exceptional sound doesn't come at the expense of the forests it depends on. The oil-based varnish on every instrument is hand-painted by an accomplished oil portrait artist — a detail most makers at this price point skip entirely.
