The 14" is one of the most versatile sizes we build. It's a natural fit for advancing younger players, and — because of how we graduate the plates — it's also become a favorite among smaller-framed adults who want a full-size sound without a full-size reach. It's not unusual for a well-set-up 14" V. Richelieu™ to project with a depth players expect from a 16" instrument.

That kind of performance doesn't happen by accident. Each 14" viola is scaled from our full 16" model and hand-graduated by senior luthiers to bring out that specific piece of wood's tonal potential, with viola-proportioned fingerboard and bridge work throughout — including the bridge geometry that keeps the C string singing instead of fighting the player.

If you've been told a smaller viola means a smaller sound, this is the size built to prove otherwise.

High-Quality Materials

Every V. Richelieu™ is made entirely in our Vermont workshop, hand-graduated by senior luthiers who thin each top and back to precise, individually judged measurements — not a factory template. Our spruce is hand-split and sourced from Italy and Switzerland; our maple comes from Bosnia. Where we can, we build with FSC®-certified tonewoods and offer GaiaTone and Sonowood as ebony-alternative fittings, so exceptional sound doesn't come at the expense of the forests it depends on. The oil-based varnish on every instrument is hand-painted by an accomplished oil portrait artist — a detail most makers at this price point skip entirely.
