Measuring 296mm along the back, the 15½" is one of the most popular sizes among adult violists who want the tone of a full-size instrument without the extra half-inch of reach a 16" body demands. It's a size we hear requested by name from players who've already tried — and outgrown the limitations of — smaller instruments.

Each V. Richelieu™ 15½" viola is made in our Vermont workshop, built from hand-split spruce and premium maple, and finished with the same hand-painted oil varnish as every other instrument in our line. The tone is full and even across all four strings, with the C string given the bridge and fingerboard geometry it needs to speak clearly instead of fighting for attention.

High-Quality Materials

Every V. Richelieu™ is made entirely in our Vermont workshop, hand-graduated by senior luthiers who thin each top and back to precise, individually judged measurements — not a factory template. Our spruce is hand-split and sourced from Italy and Switzerland; our maple comes from Bosnia. Where we can, we build with FSC®-certified tonewoods and offer GaiaTone and Sonowood as ebony-alternative fittings, so exceptional sound doesn't come at the expense of the forests it depends on. The oil-based varnish on every instrument is hand-painted by an accomplished oil portrait artist — a detail most makers at this price point skip entirely.
