For players age 12 and up (arm length 23" and above), the 4/4 is our full-size violin and the instrument most conservatory and professional players will play for the rest of their career. Ours is built on a design inspired by the Guarneri del Gesù "Plowden," with a fully finished, slim neck profile for left-hand comfort during long practice sessions and demanding repertoire.

The sound is powerful and complex — rich in tone-color, harmonics, and overtone, with strong projection that stays even and consistent across all four strings, so upper-position passages don't thin out. It's a violin equally at home in a solo recital or blended into a section, and it's built from hand-split spruce and Bosnian maple, hand-graduated by our senior luthiers for a top and back tuned to that specific piece of wood, not a fixed template.

Whether this is a step up from a 3/4 or the instrument a serious student will carry into college auditions, the 4/4 is built to be played hard for years, not outgrown in one.

Every V. Richelieu™ is made entirely in our Vermont workshop, hand-graduated by senior luthiers who thin each top and back to precise, individually judged measurements — not a factory template. Our spruce is hand-split and sourced from Italy and Switzerland; our maple comes from Bosnia. Where we can, we build with FSC®-certified tonewoods and offer GaiaTone and Sonowood as ebony-alternative fittings, so exceptional sound doesn't come at the expense of the forests it depends on. The oil-based varnish on every instrument is hand-painted by an accomplished oil portrait artist — a detail most makers at this price point skip entirely.
