The Mother Tongue Approach: Learning in Tandem

The architectural core of this summer class is built directly upon the pedagogy of Shinichi Suzuki, the legendary Japanese violinist and master educator. Suzuki revolutionized music education through his "Mother Tongue" philosophy. He made a profound, meticulous observation of childhood development: at incredibly young ages, infants master the complex fine motor activities required to vocalize, articulate, and speak their native languages long before they ever learn to read a textbook.

Suzuki realized that children do not learn to speak through formal lectures; they do it by completely emulating their parents. They listen to the micro-tones of human voice, absorb the environment, and naturally mirror those sounds. He reasoned that if a child could master something as intricate as speech through natural emulation, they could learn to play the violin using the exact same framework.

For this reason, true Suzuki training requires the presence and active integration of the parent. In this 8-week class, parent and child enter the studio as co-learners:

  • The Shared Environment: The child learns from the parent, the parent learns from the master faculty instructor, and lessons are given with both generations actively playing.

  • Cooperative Motivation: By watching their caregiver navigate the physical steps of holding the violin and catching a clean bow stroke, the child taps into their natural motivation to follow in their parent's footsteps.

  • Generational Bonding: The class removes the traditional dynamic of a parent instructing or correcting a child at home, replacing it with a cooperative journey where both are discovering a physical skill in tandem.

The Vermont Violins Starter Package & Summer Discount

To fully support this co-learning dynamic, our workshop team has prepared a custom Concord Starter Rental Kit that handles all the technical details so families can focus entirely on the emotional resonance of the music.

For the duration of the 8-week summer program, parents and children can obtain high-quality, perfectly sized prelude outfits for a flat rate of $150 for parent + child package.

By entering the program with a dedicated seasonal discount code, families receive an outfit calibrated by our New England luthiers to respond to light, developing bow arms. A comprehensive damage waiver is embedded straight into the summer bundle, ensuring parents never have to stress over accidental bumps or string breaks during home practice sessions.

For families who find their musical footing during these two months, the summer starter packages can seamlessly transition into our standard, equity-building monthly rental structures when the formal fall semester resumes.

A Historic Space for Historic Training

Founded in 1984, the Concord Community Music School has grown to become New Hampshire's largest community music anchor. Vermont Violins has worked hand-in-hand with their string department for over a decade, making frequent trips to serve their student body and touring artist faculty.

The school's gorgeous, beautifully renovated historic church facility features two acoustic performance halls alongside dozens of acoustically isolated private teaching studios. It provides the ideal regional backdrop for early childhood musical discovery.

Spaces for the summer Pre-Twinkle slots are strictly limited to 4 to 6 students per class to ensure that every parent-child duo receives highly individualized attention from the Suzuki faculty.
