FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Answer: The Gaia harp, made by Salvi, features high-tension gut strings and a robust, resonant sound. It’s often compared to the Titan for its durability and to the Troubadour for its tonal richness.

  • Answer: The Gaia harp, also made by Salvi, does not come with a transport case with wheels. However, it is relatively lightweight at about 26 lbs, making it easier to carry compared to heavier models.

  • Answer: The Gaia harp features high-tension gut strings, making it more suitable for those accustomed to higher tension. In contrast, the Lyric and the Una are lower to medium tension, offering a different playing feel.

  • Answer: Harps with a lighter tension and ergonomic design, like the Lyric or Gaia, are generally easier on beginner fingers. They offer a comfortable playing experience and are easier to handle.

  • Answer: From the Lyon and Healy and Salvi lines, the harps with higher tension include the Ogden (34 strings), the Gaia (38 strings), the Prelude 40, the Ana (40 strings), and the Troubadour (36 strings). Each offers a unique balance of tension and tone.

  • Yes. At around 26 lbs, the Gaia is much lighter than harps like the Lyon & Healy Prelude (which weighs about 44 lbs). Players who move their harp frequently appreciate the Gaia’s portability without sacrificing tone or tension.

  • The Salvi Gaia is available as a 38-string, high-tension lever harp. Its string tension and spacing are closer to a pedal harp feel, making it appealing to advancing students and pedal harpists seeking a lever harp alternative.

  • Yes. The Gaia is a high-tension, gut-strung harp, offering a playing experience that feels closer to a pedal harp. This higher tension contributes to its darker, more powerful tone and greater projection.

  • Gut strings are more sensitive than nylon or synthetic strings, but they do not break excessively when properly cared for. Maintaining stable humidity and temperature is key. While gut strings may break more often than synthetics, many players feel the tonal warmth and responsiveness are well worth the extra care.

  • Yes. The Gaia’s gut strings produce a richer, darker, and more complex tone. Some players may notice additional overtones, which many love for their depth, though a few prefer the cleaner sound of nylon. Tone preference is very personal.

  • The Gaia is best suited for intermediate to advanced players, or beginners who specifically want a darker tone and higher tension. Because it requires slightly more finger pull, true beginners often find lower-tension harps easier to start with.

    • Gaia: High tension, gut strings, heavier and darker tone, closer to pedal harp feel.

    • Mia: Lower tension, lighter and more spritely tone, easier on the hands.

The Mia is extremely popular with beginners, but it’s worth noting that even advanced players choose it for its beautiful, light sound and ease of play.

  • The Gaia offers a similar high-tension feel but at nearly half the weight. At around 26 lbs, it is far easier to transport than the 44 lb Prelude, making it a great choice for players who want pedal-harp-like playability in a more portable instrument.

  • Yes. The Salvi Gaia is available through our rental and rent-to-own program. This allows players to experience the harp over time and apply rental payments toward ownership.

  • The Gaia is often chosen by:

    • Advancing lever harp students

    • Pedal harpists seeking a portable lever harp

    • Players who love dark, rich tone

    • Musicians who prefer high string tension and strong projection

  • Yes. Built by Salvi Harps, a sister company to Lyon & Healy, the Gaia reflects exceptional craftsmanship, long-term durability, and professional-level sound quality—making it a harp many players keep for life.
