The traditional 4/4 cello, with its standard 690mm string length, can be a daunting challenge for players with smaller hands, leading to discomfort and hindering performance. We've listened to these concerns and are proud to introduce the Scala Corta cello, a revolutionary instrument designed from the ground up to address this very issue.
Designed for Comfort and Playability
The Scala Corta is the culmination of years of research into historical and modern instrument design. Inspired by the shorter string lengths of 16th-century Brescian instruments and the preferences of celebrated soloists like Natalie Clein and Carter Brey, master luthier Stephanie Voss has meticulously crafted a cello that combines unparalleled playability with the powerful projection of a full-size instrument.
By shortening the string length to a comfortable 655mm—longer than a 3/4 cello but shorter than a 7/8—the Scala Corta significantly reduces the stretch required to play, allowing for greater ease and speed. Furthermore, its unique body outline and top stop length are specifically designed to make reaching around the instrument more comfortable.
A smaller scale doesn't mean a smaller sound. While a traditional 7/8 cello may compromise on projection due to its smaller body, the Scala Corta maintains the body length of a 4/4 cello. This ensures that you get the full, resonant sound and powerful projection you expect from a professional-grade instrument.
