Welcoming Samuel Markus to Vermont Violins: Multi-Instrumentalist, Educator, and Music Historian
VERMONT VIOLINS NEWSROOM – Vermont Violins is delighted to announce the newest addition to our team: Sam, a multi-instrumentalist, dedicated educator, and music history enthusiast who brings a rich background in orchestral strings, percussion performance, and retail service to our community of players.
Growing up in Jenison, Michigan—just west of Grand Rapids—Sam’s musical journey began at the age of 10 when he first picked up both the viola and percussion. That early dual passion for string resonance and rhythmic precision laid the foundation for a life dedicated to music.
From Michigan Classrooms to the Green Mountains
In 2022, Sam earned his undergraduate degree in Percussion Performance from Alma College in Alma, Michigan, where he completed intensive studies spanning Classical, Jazz, and Rudimental percussion techniques.
In addition to being an accomplished performer, Sam deeply loves sharing his passion for music with others. Following graduation, he spent a year teaching in Michigan high school music programs, inspiring young musicians and guiding them through foundational ensemble work.
After his year of teaching, Sam made the move to Vermont, quickly establishing roots in both the local music retail space and the regional performing scene. Local audiences may recognize him from his performances with Vermont's own Catamount Pipe Band.
A Passion for Patient Service and Historical Craftsmanship
Sam brings two years of hands-on retail experience from Guitar Center, where he excelled at helping customers find the right instruments, accessories, and gear to support their personal musical goals. Now, at Vermont Violins, Sam is thrilled to bring that same customer-focused enthusiasm to our community of violin, viola, cello, and bass players, reconnecting directly with his orchestral strings roots while continuing his ongoing passion for percussion.
Outside of his work in the shop, Sam's life remains deeply tied to music, history, and craft. He is a passionate music history enthusiast who builds and refurbishes drums based on authentic historical designs, while also building a personal collection of historical percussion recordings. When he isn't researching or crafting, Sam loves to cook and unwind at home, cuddling with his cat, Edward.
