Finding a fractional violin that actually sounds like a real, singing instrument has always been a struggle for young string players. All too often, smaller violins sound thin, tight, and boxy. We built the 1/2-size V. Richelieu™ specifically for advanced young players, junior conservatory students, and serious 9- to 10-year-olds who need a responsive, full-voiced instrument that can handle demanding repertoire.
Over a Year of Hands-on R&D at the Bench
Adding a brand-new model to the V. Richelieu™ family is never a quick project. Designing this 1/2-size took more than a year of careful research, trial-and-error, prototyping, and bench testing.
When you scale a violin down for smaller hands, you cannot simply shrink a full-sized blueprint on a copier. The air cavity inside the body becomes much smaller, which usually robs the lower G and D strings of their warmth and bass response.
Our technical manufacturing team plus the bench luthiers tackled this challenge head-on:
Custom Proportions & Arching: We tweaked the arching heights and plate graduations so the top and back can vibrate freely under lighter string tension.
Wood Selection: Every piece of wood is hand-chosen for strength, lightness, and acoustic velocity from FSC-certified suppliers in Switzerland, Italy, and domestic sources here in the United States.
Varnish Formulation: We adjusted our hand-applied oil varnish to give the instrument a rich, glowing patina and deep flame without choking the instrument's natural vibration.
The end result is an easy-playing instrument with real harmonic depth, immediate bow response, and an open, projecting tone that lets kids connect emotionally with their music instead of fighting their gear.

Trial the New 1/2-Size V. Richelieu™
The 1/2-size V. Richelieu™ is available now for trial in our showroom and through home trial programs nationwide. Bring your young musician by our South Burlington or Lebanon shops, or speak with your local string dealer to set up an in-person trial.
V. Richelieu violins are 100% made in Vermont. Hand-split spruce tonewood is imported from Italy and Switzerland; maple comes to us from Bosnia. Together, these woods form a violin of unique distinction offering fine instrument quality at very affordable prices.
Each instrument is hand-graduated by our senior luthiers. The oil-based varnish is hand painted by an accomplished oil portrait artist. Each instrument is unique, but each offers a tonal quality perfect for the advancing student, conservatory student or professional player.
