Christian Petru Demeter’s workshop is based in Transylvania, Romania. A second-generation violin maker, the Demeter workshop combines modern technology with traditional handmaking to produce a line of reasonably priced instruments. This cello has a clean, crisp sound which gives advanced players comfortable playing responses and clear ringing tones for intonation. It is even across all four strings and projects well in the upper registers. The Romanian wood gives character to each individual instrument, which the transparent, light golden oil varnish visually supports. We recommend this cello for the advancing student or amateur cellist.
Richard Cartwright started as an amateur maker mentored by Marten Cornellisen who lived nearby in western Massachusetts. Cornellisen’s style can be seen in various characteristics of Cartwright’s instruments. The varnish is a similar translucent burn orange umber consistently applied. The long, narrower f-holes, instrument outlines and choices of wood remind us of Conrellisen’s work, even if the model outlines are more rounded. This particular cello is very resonant with a projecting, mezzo voice. The strings are relatively balanced, fun to play and can easily fill a room. There is plenty of color to work with.
The Gewa Germania Rome Antique Cello captures the essence of historical craftsmanship and modern innovation. Crafted with meticulous attention, this cello offers musicians a harmonious fusion of resonant tonal qualities and artistic design, embodying Gewa's commitment to producing instruments that honor tradition while embracing the demands of contemporary musicians.

The Wilhelm Klier instruments, like the Rudoulf Doetsch model, are crafted using a time-honored workshop-method tradition. These high-end instruments are made of older wood to achieve a warmer sound. They are highly flamed and varnished with a deep coloration to give a classic, old-fashioned look. The sound is described as rounder than that of a new instrument, almost as if it had already been broken in. These instruments are an excellent upgrade for the advanced musician.

The two pieces back is made of selected flamed maple. The scroll most artistically hand carved on the back and sides. These beautiful antique looking cellos have an incredibly even and focused sound.
The Per Caso Cello finished with an amber varnish added with a clarified linseed oil, making the color a charming golden-brown. This beautiful instrument produces a warm, powerful, and resonant sound.
We were delighted to discover the Scala Corta cello, designed by Stephanie Voss as the perfect answer to a frequent problem: how can a small person play an instrument as large as a cello. We frequently heard of players suffering from aches and pains as they struggled to negotiate the traditional string length of a full-scale cello.
Offering a 7/8 cello is helpful, but often they have more limited tones as the body size is reduced. The Scala Corta offers a shortened string length on a body of a full-scale cello! The smaller neck, reinforced with a carbon-fiber truss rod offers a perfect solution. Smaller hands can easily negotiate the shortened string length yet the sound is full and robust!
Not just for smaller players, those suffering from arthritis, the Scala Corta has also been a godsend: with less finger-stretching, the hands are under far less stress.
To fully accommodate the shortened string length, the peg box has also been redesigned to allow more room, pushing the C-peg higher up and further away from the hand at rest in first position.
And, to top it off, Tonareli Cases has designed a lightweight, carbon-fiber case that perfectly fits the Scala Corta — included in the price!
