This book contains the second violin part and some third violin parts written by Dr. Suzuki to selected pieces from Suzuki Violin School, Volumes 1, 2, and 3. When a student starts playing advanced pieces he may learn the second part.

This 27-page book presents practice suggestions and ideas to take the monotony away from scale practice and to develop and improve evenness, clarity, agility, speed, and intonation. The circle of 5ths is presented with 1st position finger patterns. Scales and arpeggios are written out with rhythmic variations and different combinations of bowings. Octaves, thirds, sixths, fingered octaves, and tenths---as well as harmonics, broken thirds, and chromatic scales are also presented with practice suggestions. Position Pieces for Cello by Rick Mooney  is designed to give students a logical and fun way to learn their way around the fingerboard. Each hand position is introduced with exercises called "Target Practice," "Geography Quiz," and "Names and Numbers." Following these exercises are tuneful cello duets which have been specifically composed to require students to play in that hand position. In this way, students gain a thorough knowledge of how to find the hand positions, and once there, which notes are possible to play. Using these pieces (with names like "I Was a Teenage Monster," "The Irish Tenor," and "I've Got the Blues, Baby"), position study on the cello has never been so much fun!

As with the other books in his "...for Cello" series, Rick Mooney has made the learning of a specific technique easier and more enjoyable than ever before. The pieces in these books include easy classical music (e.g. from the "Anna Magdalena Notebook" and Tschaikowsky's "Album for the Young") as well as folk songs, fiddle tunes and several pieces by Mr. Mooney specially composed to address specific technical points. All of the pieces have been arranged as duets, with a second cello part for the teacher (or other students in a group class) to play. As a result, students are readily able to hear when they are playing accurately. "Thumb Position for Cello" comes in two volumes. Book 1 includes only the four basic fingering patterns used in thumb posi- tion. This is the only book available which gives the student so much opportunity for repetition and mastery of basic thumb position technique. Book 2 (available in 1999) includes more advanced thumb position techniques including chromatic finger patterns, extending the hand, use of fourth finger, moving the thumb across as well as up and down the string, and getting into and out of thumb position. These well-organized, enjoyable books will be a welcome addition to the libraries of all teachers and students of the cello.
