Etudes for Violin!

Carl Flesch’s Scale System is, almost a century afterits initial conception, still one of the most widely-used scale methods foradvanced violinists.  The current editionis a revision by one of Flesch’s pupils, Max Rostal, who translated andexpanded the method for easier reading.  Asthe full title suggests, scales and arpeggios are presented in all major andminor keys, as well as in a variety of rhythmic patterns for well-roundedpractice. 

Beginning with long tones and ending with running sixteenth notes, Hřímalý’s Scale Studies for Violin runs the gamut of technical requirements. One of the strengths of this particular book is its focus on building left hand dexterity through use of scales. Other exercises explore bowing styles and mixed rhythms. R. Kreutzer’s 42 études (originally written for violin and here transcribed for viola)  have remained a core part of the teaching repertoire since their publication, and are today perhaps the most common set of studies for intermediate and advanced students of the violin. Another of Kreutzer's important didactic goals was developing fluency in contraction and extension of the left hand, which is also crucial to modern students of the violin.
