Bow makers are in search of  quality  alternative woods as accessibility and the legality of Pernambuco stocks  declines. Katalox , like cream, has risen to the top of acceptable alternatives. Katalox is commonly referred to as Royal Mexican ebony. The lanky tree’s habitat ranges from Mexico south through central America to the northern tier of South America. It’s stiff, strong wood has been attractive to wood workers looking for alternatives to threatened ebony species. Magically, the physical characteristics of this wood manage to satisfy both woodworkers and bowmakers. Rodney Mohr has deftly manipulated the physical strength to create a supple, responsive stick. Like Pernambuco, each stick has its own unique character.  We’ve included two short videos and descriptions from staff to help describe the strengths of this beautiful, non-threatened, ebony alternative.

International Alliance of Violin and
Bow Makers for Endangered Species

Over the past 40 years, increasing threats to the stocks of natural resources used in instrument and bow making have led to restrictions on the materials used to create and maintain these cultural treasures.

Pernambuco has been used to make bows for over 250 years, enhancing the performance of stringed music for generations. The wood's native habitat in Brazil's Atlantic Rainforest has been reduced to fragments of its original extent. Today, Pernambuco is increasingly rare and endangered in many areas of its native habitat.

In 2018 the International Alliance of Violin and Bow Makers for Endangered Species was created. Alliance members include instrument and bow-making organizations, members of, and suppliers to, the trade, music performance organizations, and individuals.
