FEATURED CELLO

CHAROTTE CELLO

In 1732, Mirecourt luthiers obtained the charter that allowed them to organize and work legally building and selling string instruments. The Charotte family began making instruments in Mirecourt in the mid 1700s, including Charles Claude & Charles Francois. This cello was built by one of the family in the early 1800s and is branded Charotte a Mirecourt. The cello has a rich brown oil varnish over a Glowing golden ground.  The single-piece back flattens out towards the bottom half, giving the cello a strong projection. The long narrow f-holes give the cello an artistic grace. The cello sings with a lyrical alto voice that is rich and clear.  The cello comes to us from a retired professional player.

CARRIE SCOGGINS

Carrie Scoggins is a respected member of the American Federation of Violin and Bow Makers and the Violin Society of America. She attended the Salt Lake City, Utah Violin Making School of America in 1979. She continued at the school until 1984 teaching varnish and set-up. In 1988, she and her husband opened their shop in Salt Lake City. She currently focuses only on the building of her own instruments. This particular cello was one of the highlights of the Celebrating Women in Lutherie Exhibit this past spring. Its poignant, deep tone and character made it an attraction for visiting cellists. It’s a beautiful instrument for a conservatory student, serious amateur, or professional player.

HARVEY FAIRBANKS CELLO (SOLD)

Harvey Fairbanks was a part-time American maker from Binghamton, NY. His most famous instrument was a viola used earlier by Michael Tree from the Guarneri String Quartet. More interested in making violas, to the best of our knowledge, this is the only cello Harvey Fairbanks built. It appears to have American maple and possibly American spruce as well. The workmanship is comparable to many smaller shops in Europe. This cello has a warm tone with good, clean projection. It plays easily and would work well for an advancing student or serious amateur musician looking for a hand-built instrument.

GEORGE CRASKE CELLO

Craske was known as the English Stradivarius. A prolific maker, and recluse, he is believed to have started and/or completed roughly 3000 instruments from the early to late 1800s. Some of these instruments were purchased in completed and uncompleted form by the Hill shop at the time of his death. Based on the label and construction, this cello was probably finished in the Hill shop after George Craske died. Like many old English instruments, this cello has had extensive repairs to the ribs and top, and a neck graft. It is fully restored and would make a great instrument for a serious amateur or student looking for an 1800s cello from a well-known maker at a good price.
